Meet the Breeder: Why I Sometimes Keep a Kitten Instead of Selling It

One of the hardest questions I get asked is:
"Why are you keeping that kitten instead of selling it?"
The honest answer?
Because every once in a while, a kitten comes along that has the potential to shape the future of Aspen Maine Coons.
Every Kitten Is Special
I love every kitten born here. Every litter has its own personalities, funny moments, and milestones. But occasionally, one kitten makes me stop and think...
"This one might help improve my breeding program."
That's a very different decision than simply choosing my favorite kitten.
Looking Beyond Today
When I decide whether to keep a kitten, I'm thinking years into the future.
I'm looking at things like:
Overall structure
Breed type
Temperament
Pedigree
Health
How this kitten may complement the rest of my breeding program
It's a decision that's made with the future of the breed in mind.
It's Never an Easy Choice
Keeping a kitten means saying "no" to a wonderful family who may have fallen in love with that same kitten. Those conversations are never easy. I know how exciting it is to find the kitten you've been dreaming about. But every responsible breeding program has to make difficult decisions that will benefit future generations.
Every New Breeder Is Built One Generation at a Time
Aspen Maine Coons didn't become what it is overnight. Every generation builds on the one before it. Sometimes that means bringing in new bloodlines. Sometimes it means traveling to pick up a special kitten from another breeder. And sometimes it means recognizing that one extraordinary kitten was born right here in my own home.
Those moments are incredibly exciting because they represent years of planning coming together.
Watching Them Grow
One of the greatest joys is watching those kittens mature into healthy, confident adults.
Seeing them eventually become loving parents and produce wonderful kittens of their own is one of the most rewarding parts of responsible breeding. It's a reminder that every thoughtful decision has the potential to benefit families for many years to come.
More Than a Breeding Program
Every cat who joins my breeding program carries a tremendous responsibility.
They represent the future of Aspen Maine Coons. That means every decision I make must be based on what is best for the breed—not simply what is easiest in the moment.
Those choices aren't always easy. But they are always made with great care.
Final Thoughts
People often see the kittens that go home. They don't always see the careful planning behind the kittens that stay. Sometimes the greatest gift I can give future kitten families is keeping one exceptional kitten today, so that years from now, Aspen Maine Coons continues to produce healthy, beautiful, affectionate Maine Coons that are a joy to live with.
Those are some of the hardest decisions I make as a breeder. They're also some of the most important.
Thank you for following the journey of Aspen Maine Coons and for welcoming us into your home, one story at a time. 🐾
