How Big Will My Maine Coon Get?

One of the questions I hear all the time at Aspen Maine Coons is:

"How big will my Maine Coon get?"

It's understandable. Maine Coons are famous for their impressive size, huge fluffy tails, long bodies, and those magnificent paws.

But predicting the exact adult size of a Maine Coon kitten isn't quite as simple as it sounds.

Maine Coons Are a Large Breed

Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds, but there can be a tremendous amount of variation from one cat to another.

Males generally grow larger than females, but gender alone doesn't determine adult size.

Genetics, body structure, nutrition, overall health, and individual development all play a role.

Can I Predict a Kitten's Adult Weight?

Not exactly.

I can look at the parents, pedigree, bone structure, and growth of a kitten and sometimes get an idea of how that kitten may develop.

But I would never promise a family that their kitten will eventually weigh a specific number of pounds.

A large kitten doesn't automatically become the largest adult, and the smallest kitten in a litter doesn't necessarily stay small.

They grow on their own schedules.

Maine Coons Take Their Time Growing

One of the fascinating things about Maine Coons is that they mature slowly compared with many other cats.

That means the kitten you bring home is going to change tremendously over the next several years.

Bodies lengthen.

Chests broaden.

Coats develop.

Tails become spectacular.

And those enormous kitten paws eventually begin looking slightly more proportional!

Watching that transformation is one of the joys of owning a Maine Coon.

Bigger Isn't Always Better

There is a lot of attention online surrounding enormous Maine Coons.

But size should never be the primary measure of a beautiful or well-bred Maine Coon.

At Aspen Maine Coons, my goal isn't to produce the heaviest cat possible.

Health, temperament, structure, breed type, and quality are far more important to me than chasing a number on a scale.

A healthy, beautifully structured 15-pound Maine Coon isn't somehow less of a Maine Coon than one weighing 20 pounds.

Enjoy the Growing Years

If you're bringing home a Maine Coon kitten, my advice is simple:

Enjoy watching them grow.

Take pictures.

Lots of them.

One day you'll look back at that little kitten with oversized ears and ridiculous paws and wonder how that enormous fluffy creature ever fit in your arms.

And while I can't tell you exactly how big your Aspen Maine Coons kitten will become, I can almost guarantee one thing:

They'll somehow manage to take up considerably more space in your home than their actual measurements would suggest. 🐾
