Male vs. Female Maine Coons: Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions I receive from future kitten families is:

"Should I get a male or female Maine Coon?"

Many families come to Aspen Maine Coons absolutely certain they want one or the other. Sometimes that preference comes from a previous cat they loved, and sometimes they've heard that male and female Maine Coons have completely different personalities.

The truth is a little more complicated.

Personality Matters More Than Gender

There are plenty of generalizations about male and female Maine Coons, but individual personality matters much more than gender alone.

I've seen incredibly affectionate males and incredibly affectionate females.

I've seen confident, outgoing girls and laid-back boys.

Every kitten develops its own personality, and that's part of the fun of watching a litter grow.

Are Male Maine Coons Bigger?

Generally, adult male Maine Coons tend to be larger than females.

But Maine Coons grow for several years, and genetics play an enormous role in eventual size.

A kitten's parents, bloodlines, nutrition, and individual development all influence how large that kitten may eventually become.

Even as a breeder, I can't look at a tiny kitten and promise exactly how many pounds that cat will weigh as an adult.

What About Temperament?

You'll often hear that males are more outgoing or goofy while females are more independent.

Sometimes that's exactly what happens.

And sometimes Mother Nature completely ignores the rulebook.

That's why I encourage families not to choose a kitten based entirely on stereotypes about gender.

Don't Overlook the Girls!

Right now at Aspen Maine Coons, I'm seeing an interesting trend: nearly everyone is asking for males!

I currently have a growing waitlist of families hoping for boys while beautiful female kittens are available.

I completely understand having a preference, but I always encourage families not to overlook the girls simply because they've heard that male Maine Coons are bigger, friendlier, or more affectionate.

Female Maine Coons can be incredibly affectionate, social, playful, confident companions. Personality varies tremendously from cat to cat, regardless of gender.

If your heart is absolutely set on a male, I'm happy to keep your place on the waitlist and wait with you.

But if you're open to meeting one of the girls, your future Maine Coon might already be here waiting for you. 🐾

Being Flexible Can Shorten Your Wait

This is particularly important for families joining the Aspen Maine Coons waitlist.

If you're absolutely committed to one gender, that's completely fine. I'm happy to keep you waiting for exactly what you're hoping for.

But Mother Nature determines how many males and females arrive in every litter.

Families who are open to either gender often have more opportunities when kittens become available and may be able to welcome their Maine Coon home sooner.

Your preferences can also change while you're waiting.

If you've been waiting for a male and I have a wonderful female available, I'll let you know. There's never pressure to change your preference, but I want my families to know what options are available.

Choose the Cat, Not Just the Category

Color and gender are understandably important to many families.

They're part of the excitement of imagining your future Maine Coon.

But I also encourage people to leave a little room for the unexpected.

Sometimes the kitten you thought you wanted isn't the kitten who ultimately steals your heart.

And I've learned that Maine Coons are particularly talented at changing people's plans.

Final Thoughts

So, should you choose a male or female Maine Coon?

There isn't one right answer.

If you've always dreamed of a big male Maine Coon, wait for your boy.

If your heart is set on a beautiful female, wait for your girl.

And if you're open to either, you may discover that the perfect kitten arrives wearing a completely different label than you expected.
