Meet the Breeder: Why I Chose to Raise Maine Coons

People often ask me how I became a Maine Coon breeder.
The truth is, I never set out to become one.
Like so many of my kitten families, I simply fell in love with the breed.
What started as an admiration for their beauty quickly became a passion for everything they represent—their intelligence, gentle personalities, playful nature, and the incredible bonds they form with their families.
The more I learned about Maine Coons, the more I realized responsible breeding was about so much more than producing beautiful kittens. It was about preserving one of the most extraordinary cat breeds in the world.
Learning Never Stops
When I began this journey, I thought raising kittens would be the hard part.
I was wrong. The real work has been learning.
Every year has taught me something new about:
Genetics
Nutrition
Health testing
Socialization
Neonatal kitten care
Responsible breeding practices
I've celebrated healthy litters and beautiful milestones. I've also experienced heartbreak, difficult losses, sleepless nights, emergency veterinary visits, and moments that tested my resolve. Every challenge has made me a better breeder.
My Philosophy
I believe every kitten deserves the very best start in life.
That's why my breeding program focuses on much more than appearance.
Every breeding decision is made with health, temperament, and long-term wellbeing in mind.
Our breeding cats receive comprehensive health testing, including DNA screening, echocardiograms, and hip evaluations. Our kittens are raised inside our home, where they experience everyday life, daily handling, and constant socialization from the very beginning.
My goal has never been to produce the most kittens.
My goal has always been to produce exceptional companions.
Why TICA Matters to Me
One of the ways I continue learning is by participating in TICA cat shows.
Showing our Maine Coons allows me to receive feedback from experienced judges, better understand the breed standard, and continue improving my breeding program. Winning is exciting, but learning is the real reward. There is always something new to discover.
More Than a Business
People sometimes ask if breeding cats is my job. I usually smile because the truth is, it's much more personal than that. These cats live in my home. I know every personality, every favorite toy, every funny habit, and every little quirk.
When one of my kittens leaves for their forever home, I don't just hand over paperwork.
I'm saying goodbye to a kitten I've loved since the day they were born. Fortunately, I gain something wonderful in return. I get to watch that kitten become part of another family.
Looking Ahead
My hope is that Aspen Maine Coons continues to grow, not simply by producing beautiful kittens, but by building trust through education, responsible breeding, and lifelong relationships with the families who welcome our kittens into their homes.
Every blog I write, every health test I perform, every cat show I attend, and every question I answer has the same purpose:
To become the very best breeder I can be.
Thank you for following our journey and for allowing me to share my passion for these incredible gentle giants.
I truly believe the best is still ahead—for Aspen Maine Coons, for our breeding program, and for every kitten yet to be born. 🐾
