What Happens at a TICA Cat Show? A Beginner's Guide for Cat Lovers

When most people hear the words "cat show," they picture cats sitting quietly in decorated cages while judges walk by and hand out ribbons.

The reality is much more exciting.

This weekend, Aspen Maine Coons will be attending a TICA (The International Cat Association) cat show with Gandolf, one of our young Maine Coons. As we prepare for the event, we thought it would be fun to explain exactly what happens at a cat show and why so many breeders enjoy participating.

If you've never attended a cat show before, you're not alone. Most of our kitten families have never been to one either.

What Is a TICA Cat Show?

TICA cat shows bring together breeders, exhibitors, and cat lovers from across the country.

Over the course of a weekend, cats are evaluated by multiple judges according to their breed standards. Unlike many competitions, cats are judged numerous times by different judges, providing a broad range of evaluations and feedback.

The goal is not simply to determine which cat is the prettiest. Judges evaluate how closely each cat matches the ideal characteristics established for its breed.

The Show Hall Experience

Walking into a cat show is an unforgettable experience.

You'll see dozens of breeds, including:

  • Maine Coons

  • Bengals

  • Ragdolls

  • Siberians

  • Sphynx Cats

  • British Shorthairs

  • Norwegian Forest Cats

  • And many more

Exhibitors create comfortable spaces where their cats can rest between judging sessions. Visitors are often surprised by how friendly and educational the environment can be.

Many breeders enjoy answering questions and sharing information about their breeds.

How Judging Works

Throughout the weekend, exhibitors bring their cats to individual judging rings.

Each judge evaluates the cats independently according to the breed standard.

For Maine Coons, judges may evaluate:

  • Head shape

  • Muzzle structure

  • Ear placement

  • Eye shape

  • Body proportions

  • Bone structure

  • Tail length

  • Coat texture and quality

  • Overall balance

Because multiple judges participate, exhibitors receive valuable feedback from several experienced perspectives.

It's About More Than Beauty

One of the biggest misconceptions about cat shows is that judges simply choose the most attractive cat.

In reality, cat shows focus on preserving and improving breeds.

Judges compare each cat against the written breed standard rather than against personal preference alone.

This helps breeders make informed decisions that support the long-term health and integrity of the breed.

The Finals

One of the most exciting moments of the show is the finals.

After evaluating numerous cats throughout the day, judges select their top cats for recognition.

When a cat is called into finals, exhibitors gather around the ring to hear placements announced.

Whether you're competing or simply watching, finals are often one of the most entertaining parts of the weekend.

Why Breeders Attend Cat Shows

For responsible breeders, cat shows are about far more than ribbons.

Shows provide opportunities to:

  • Learn from experienced judges

  • Evaluate breeding cats

  • Study breed development

  • Network with fellow breeders

  • Continue improving breeding programs

Every show offers valuable lessons that can benefit future generations of Maine Coons.

Do Cats Enjoy Cat Shows?

This is one of the most common questions visitors ask.

The answer depends on the individual cat.

Successful show cats are often:

  • Confident

  • Curious

  • Adaptable

  • Calm in new environments

Many seem to enjoy the attention and activity. Others decide that show life isn't for them, and that's perfectly fine too.

Temperament is an important part of what judges and breeders consider.

Following Gandolf's Journey

This weekend, Aspen Maine Coons will be exhibiting Gandolf at a TICA cat show.

We're excited to see how he develops, learn from the judges, and spend time with fellow breeders who share our passion for Maine Coons. Whether he earns awards or simply gains experience, every show helps us continue learning and growing as breeders.

Interested in Attending a Cat Show?

If you've never attended a cat show before, we highly recommend it.

Cat shows are a wonderful opportunity to:

  • Meet breeders

  • Learn about different cat breeds

  • Watch judging in action

  • Ask questions

  • Experience the cat fancy community firsthand

You may even discover a breed you've never encountered before.

Final Thoughts

Cat shows are much more than competitions. They are educational events that bring together breeders, exhibitors, and cat lovers who share a passion for preserving and improving their breeds.

For Aspen Maine Coons, showing is one way we continue learning, growing, and striving to produce healthy, beautiful Maine Coons with excellent temperaments.

And this weekend, we're excited to bring you along for the journey with Gandolf.
