Special Announcement: Aspen Maine Coons will be participating in the Aurora, Colorado, TICA Cat Show on June 20-21, and we're excited to continue learning more about the breed we love.

Many people assume cat shows are simply beauty contests. While beautiful cats certainly attend, responsible breeders know that cat shows are about much more than appearance.

For us, showing our Maine Coons is part of our commitment to preserving, improving, and learning about the breed.

What Is TICA?

The International Cat Association (TICA) is one of the world's largest cat registries and sanctioning organizations.

TICA establishes breed standards and provides a way for breeders to have their cats evaluated by trained judges.

These evaluations help breeders better understand how their cats compare to the Maine Coon breed standard.

Why Do Breeders Show Their Cats?

Responsible breeders are always learning.

At a TICA show, multiple judges evaluate each cat's:

  • Head structure

  • Muzzle

  • Ear placement

  • Eye shape

  • Body structure

  • Tail

  • Coat

  • Overall balance

The goal is not simply to win ribbons. The goal is to gather valuable feedback that helps guide future breeding decisions.

Cat Shows Help Preserve the Breed

Every purebred cat has a breed standard. The Maine Coon standard describes the characteristics that make the breed unique.

By participating in cat shows, breeders can better understand:

  • Breed strengths

  • Areas for improvement

  • How their breeding program is progressing

This helps preserve the qualities that have made Maine Coons one of the most beloved cat breeds in the world.

Socialization Matters

One of the biggest benefits of showing is that it highlights the importance of temperament.

A cat show environment includes:

  • New people

  • New sounds

  • Travel

  • Handling by judges

Cats that have been properly socialized from an early age are typically much more comfortable in these situations.

At Aspen Maine Coons, our kittens are raised in our home with daily interaction and exposure to normal household life. This early socialization helps build confidence that benefits them throughout their lives.

Showing Is Part of Responsible Breeding

Showing is only one piece of a responsible breeding program.

At Aspen Maine Coons, we also focus on:

  • Health testing

  • DNA screening

  • Echocardiograms

  • Hip evaluations

  • In-home socialization

  • Careful pedigree research

Together, these practices help us work toward producing healthy, well-adjusted Maine Coons that represent the breed well.

Final Thoughts

Showing Maine Coons is not about trophies. It is about education, improvement, and the preservation of the breed's future.

Every show provides an opportunity to learn from experienced judges, connect with fellow breeders, and continue building a breeding program focused on health, temperament, and quality.

At Aspen Maine Coons, we believe learning never stops, and participating in TICA shows is one of the many ways we continue striving to produce exceptional Maine Coons for generations to come. 🐾
