Meet the Breeder: The Hardest Lessons I've Learned Raising Maine Coons

When people see fluffy kittens playing or beautiful adult Maine Coons stretched across my living room, it's easy to think breeding is all joy and cuddles.

There are certainly plenty of those moments.

But some of my greatest lessons have come during the hardest days.

Breeding has taught me that experience isn't measured by the number of litters you've raised. It's measured by how willing you are to keep learning.

Every Litter Teaches Me Something

One lesson I've learned is that no two litters are ever the same.

One queen may have an effortless delivery while another needs extra support.

One litter may grow like clockwork, while another keeps you checking on them every hour.

I've learned not to assume that because something happened one way before, it will happen that way again. The cats are always teaching me.

There Is No Finish Line

When I first became interested in breeding, I thought there would come a day when I had all the answers. I know now that day will never come.

Every TICA cat show, every conversation with another ethical breeder, every veterinary appointment, and every new research article teaches me something I didn't know before.

That's one of the things I love most about this journey.

The learning never ends.

Sometimes the Best Decision Is to Change Your Mind

As breeders, we make hundreds of decisions every year. Occasionally, new information leads us to improve how we do things. I don't see that as a mistake. I see it as growth.

Responsible breeding means being willing to listen, ask questions, and adjust when better information becomes available. My cats deserve that. So do the families who trust me with one of their future companions.

The Joy Always Outweighs the Challenges

For every sleepless night, there is a moment that reminds me why I do this. Watching newborn kittens open their eyes. Seeing a shy kitten become confident.

Receiving a photo months later of one of my kittens stretched out on a family's couch, completely at home. Hearing that a child has found their best friend. Those moments make every challenge worthwhile.

More Than a Breeding Program

Aspen Maine Coons isn't built on the idea of being perfect. It's built on the commitment to always do better. To continue learning. To ask questions. To seek advice from veterinarians, experienced breeders, and trusted mentors. To make thoughtful decisions based on what is best for each cat. That philosophy guides every part of my breeding program.
