How to Choose a Reputable Maine Coon Breeder (And Avoid Scams)

If you've ever searched online for Maine Coon kittens, you've probably discovered that there are a LOT of breeders out there.
Some are wonderful, dedicated breeders who genuinely care about their cats. Others, unfortunately, are not.
And then there are the scammers who don't even have kittens!
One of the questions I wish more people would ask before purchasing a Maine Coon kitten is:
"How do I know if I'm choosing a reputable breeder?"
As the owner of Aspen Maine Coons, I want to help families make informed decisions, whether they ultimately purchase a kitten from me or another breeder. Here are some important things to look for.
1. Look for a Registered Maine Coon Breeder
A reputable breeder should be willing to share information about their breeding program and registration.
Aspen Maine Coons is registered with The International Cat Association (TICA) and licensed through the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act (PACFA) in Colorado.
Registration alone doesn't guarantee that someone is an excellent breeder, but it gives prospective families an important starting point.
Don't be afraid to ask questions and verify information.
2. Ask About Genetic Health Testing
Maine Coons are magnificent cats, but like all breeds, they can inherit certain health conditions.
Responsible breeding involves understanding those risks and making informed decisions.
Ask breeders about DNA testing, particularly for conditions associated with Maine Coons, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKDef).
It's also important to understand that a negative DNA result doesn't guarantee a cat will never develop a health condition.
For example, cardiac ultrasounds, also called echocardiograms, can provide important information about heart health beyond genetic screening.
At Aspen Maine Coons, health testing, veterinary guidance, and careful breeding decisions are important parts of our program.
A good breeder should be comfortable discussing both the strengths and limitations of health testing.
3. Find Out Where the Kittens Are Raised
This is one of my favorite subjects because I believe early socialization is incredibly important.
At Aspen Maine Coons, our kittens are raised in our home alongside my children, their friends, and Bloom, our family dog.
They experience everyday household sounds, different people, playtime, and the normal activity of family life.
My goal is to raise confident, affectionate kittens who are comfortable becoming part of a family.
Ask breeders about their kittens' environment, handling, and early experiences.
Kittens learn an incredible amount during their first weeks of life.
4. Be Careful of Prices That Seem Too Good to Be True
Maine Coons are a highly sought-after breed, and unfortunately, scammers know it.
If you see an advertisement offering a gorgeous, purebred Maine Coon kitten for an unbelievably low price, take a closer look. That doesn't automatically mean it's a scam, but it should encourage you to ask additional questions.
A responsible breeding program involves substantial expenses, including veterinary care, health testing, quality nutrition, registration, and the everyday costs of raising cats and kittens.
Price alone doesn't determine quality.
An expensive kitten isn't automatically better, and a lower-priced kitten isn't automatically poorly bred.
What matters is understanding the kitten's breeding program behind the kitten.
5. Watch for Maine Coon Kitten Scams
Unfortunately, kitten scams are common online.
Scammers may steal photographs from legitimate breeders, create convincing websites, and advertise kittens that don't actually exist.
Some warning signs include:
Pressure to send money immediately
Refusal to provide reasonable verification of the kitten
Inconsistent information about the kitten or breeder
Payment requests through suspicious or difficult-to-recover methods
Photos appearing under multiple unrelated breeder names
Claims that nearly every color, gender, and age is always available
A legitimate breeder should be able to establish their identity and explain their purchasing process.
And remember, not allowing in-person visits does not automatically mean a breeder is fraudulent.
Many responsible breeders, including Aspen Maine Coons, limit visitors to protect young kittens and their mothers from unnecessary disease exposure and stress.
Other ways to establish trust, including communication, videos, documentation, and an established breeding history.
6. Ask About the Purchase Contract and Health Guarantee
Before sending a deposit, ask to review the breeder's purchase agreement.
You should understand what is included with your kitten, what health protections are offered, and what happens if circumstances change.
Pay particular attention to deposit policies, payment terms, and any responsibilities you have as the buyer.
At Aspen Maine Coons, families review and sign our Health Guarantee and Purchase Contract as part of the reservation process.
I believe everyone should understand the agreement before making a commitment.
7. Don't Expect Every Kitten to Be Available Immediately
One thing that surprises prospective families is that responsible breeders may have waitlists.
Breeding isn't an exact science.
We can't order six silver males with enormous paws and have Mother Nature deliver them on Tuesday!
Litter sizes, colors, patterns, and genders are never guaranteed.
Sometimes a breeder has available kittens. Other times, families may wait months for their preferred kitten.
Neither situation automatically tells you whether a breeder is reputable.
What matters is honest communication about availability and expectations.
8. Look for a Breeder Who Is Willing to Answer Questions
You should feel comfortable asking questions before committing to a kitten.
A knowledgeable breeder won't necessarily have every answer, but they should be willing to explain their practices and be honest about what they know.
Breeding is a continuous learning experience.
Even after years of raising Maine Coons, I am still learning, researching, consulting veterinarians, and making decisions based on new information.
I think that's an important part of being responsible for these beautiful animals.
9. Ask About the Kitten's Parents
A kitten's parents can tell you a great deal about its background.
Ask about their health testing, temperament, pedigree, and breed characteristics.
If you're hoping for a particularly large Maine Coon, remember that even knowing both parents' sizes cannot guarantee a kitten's eventual adult weight.
A reputable breeder should help you understand what is reasonably predictable and what isn't.
10. Trust the Relationship, Not Just the Photographs
Beautiful kitten photographs are wonderful.
I take plenty of them myself!
But choosing a breeder involves more than falling in love with a fluffy face on the internet.
Pay attention to how the breeder communicates, whether their answers are consistent, and whether they seem genuinely invested in their cats' well-being.
A good breeder-buyer relationship is built on trust, transparency, and realistic expectations.
And ideally, that relationship doesn't end the day your kitten goes home.
Final Thoughts
Choosing a Maine Coon breeder is an important decision.
These cats can be part of your family for many years, and the work that happens before your kitten is born matters just as much as the day you bring them home.
Take your time. Ask questions. Do your research.
Whether you choose Aspen Maine Coons or another reputable breeder, hope is that you bring home a healthy, happy kitten from someone who genuinely cares about the cats they raise.
Because behind every beautiful Maine Coon kitten should be a breeder who takes that responsibility seriously.
And those enormous paws deserve a pretty good start in life. 🐾
